Offered for your consideration is a 0.00 note issued by the Confederate States of America in the final year of the Civil War, cataloged by the late Grover Criswell as a T-64. The central portion of this piece features a lengthy financial obligation that states that
“Two Years after the Ratification of a Treaty of Peace between the CONFEDERATE STATES & THE UNITED STATES, THE Confederate States OF AMERICA Will pay to the bearer on demand FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS”
, followed by the location,
“Richmond”
, and the date,
“Feby 17
th
1864”
. This statement is guaranteed by the signatures of “
V. Penrifoy
”
(Mrs. V. M. Penrifoy) and “
A. Stuart
” (Miss A. S. Stuart), two female employees of the Confederate Treasury who sign
“for Register”
, and
“for Treasurer”
, respectively. At the left end of the note is a vignette depicting a representation of the Great Seal of the Confederacy (George Washington mounted on a horse, with the motto
“DEO VINDICE”
– “God Will Vindicate”), surrounded by a Confederate Second National Flag and a panoply of military items. A smaller vignette, presented in the lower right corner features a ¾ facing view of Confederate Lieutenant General Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson, one of the most famous and important leaders in the Southern army (Jackson was killed by “friendly fire” at the battle of Chancellorsville in early May, 1863). The denomination appears in the upper corners, neatly placed above the vignettes. A reddish-pink protectorate adds a splash of color to the note, with the letter
“D”
, the Roman numeral for 500, dominating the center. The note was printed by
“Keatinge & Ball, Columbia, S. C.”
, a fact verified by their imprint at the bottom center. It is interesting that though this is the highest denomination note issued in this final series of Confederate currency, the back was left blank (one would think that the highest valued note would have the most anti-counterfeiting measures associated with it – all of the other notes in the series except for the lowest denominations have printed backs). These notes are always popular with collectors due to the high denomination, the portrayal of the Confederate seal, and the association with General T. J. “Stonewall” Jackson. An eye appealing note that would make a great addition, or beginning, to any Confederate currency or general Civil War collection.
This note has been professionally graded and encapsulated by Paper Money Guaranty as
“Extremely Fine 40”
, with no further notations on the back of the holder. This piece is reasonably well-centered, though there is no sharp inner frame-line to define the edge (a decorative border, executed in the color of the protectorate, is barely affected at the top). The protectorate is quite light, though whether this is due more to fading or a poor mixture of ink at the time of production is unknown to the seller. The contrast is average, though the design is somewhat affected by scattered soiling. Minor ink corrosion is noted at the signatures, though none of the paper has been lost. Toning is present across the entire surface, significantly more pronounced on the blank back. Minor folds and wrinkles are present, commensurate with the assigned grade. A nice, representative example of this very popular note.
