ID'd 19th C. ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR ERA PHOTO & CERTIFICATE INDIANA INFANTRY TINTYPE

Up for auction is an original old tintype photograph along with an original certificate of promotion of
EMANUEL OHMIT
(id'd behind photo) who enlisted in the Civil War into the
INDIANA 147th Infantry "H" Company
.
During his time enlisted, Emanuel Ohmit was promoted to Corporal.
It shows he was appointed to Corporal - Company "H" of the 147th ... Regiment Indiana Vols.  The appointment was approved/signed by Col. Milton Peden (more about the Colonel in the listing).
The 147th Indiana Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment from Indiana that served in the Union Army between March 13th and August 4th, 1865, during the American Civil War.
The regiment consisted of seven companies recruited from the 5th district, two companies from the 11th, and one composed of detachments from Benton, Henry, and Fayette counties.
The regiment was organized at Indianapolis, Indiana, with a strength of 1,078 men and mustered in on March 13, 1865.
It left Indiana for Harper's Ferry, West Virginia on March 16th. It was attached to the 1st Brigade of the 3rd Provisional Division, Army of the Shenandoah, and guard duty at Charleston, Stevenson's Station, Summit Point, Berryville, Harpers Ferry, West Virginia and Maryland Heights, Missouri till early August.  During their service the regiment incurred 44 fatalities, and another 63 deserted.  One man went accounted for.
The tintype photo that comes in half case,
measures approximately 3" x 2.5" (size includes case).
The framed certificate of promotion measures approximately 15.75" x 11" (size includes frame).
The Colonel -
MILTON PEDEN
, who signed the document had a quite a storied life.  Living in Indiana as cabinet maker, at the age of 26... in 1849, he heard about "gold" in California.
Seems Peden struck it rich during the California gold rush of 1849.  He also went to Pikes Peak during that gold rush too!  He was a Justice of The Peace when the Civil War began and resigned his position to respond to the demands of his country.  He enlisted in 1861 as a 1st Lieutenant  in the Indiana 36th Infantry - Company "K" and was promoted through the ranks to Colonel.
He participated in the important battles such as Army of the Cumberland, Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee (April 6-7 1862) to the fall of Atlanta, Georgia (September 2, 1864). He was severely wounded in the right thigh at the Battle of Stone’s River, Tennessee (December 31, 1862) and unfit for duty for a period of four months.  The history of the 36th Indiana Infantry is the military history of Captain Peden.  He mustered out in September 1864.
He then returned home to Indiana from the war to meet with civic honors and was elected State Senator.
HOWEVER...
That would be short lived.  At the urgent solicitation of Governor Morton, Senator Peden resigned his seat in the State Senate and was appointed Colonel of the 147th Indiana Infantry, and was mustered into the service of the United States, March 15, 1865. He was ordered, with his command, to the Valley of Virginia, where he continued to serve until the close of the war, when he was mustered out, August 4, 1865 at
Harper’s Ferry, Virginia.
His total military service covered a period of three years and six months.
I'm truly simplifying this mans life.
I did find it interesting that in a summary of his career, Colonel Peden was quoted as saying that he
"Justly considered the most important events in his life to have been his support of
Abraham Lincoln for President in 1860 and 1864 and his military services in the Civil War.

I know I got a little side tracked on the Colonel, but he did sign the document and what an interesting life!  What a great read that would actually be.

Condition as pictured.  The photo shows some lifting on the right side, but it doesn't touch the sitter.  The photo rests in a half case only.  The certificate of promotion has foxing and creasing but because someone, quite some time ago, decided to frame it, so... it truly help to preserve this document.  ****Please see photos (and enlarge) for reference****.
