    Description

1864 .00 Confederate States Note – PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45
Offered for your consideration is a .00 Civil War era note issued by the Confederate States of America, cataloged by the late Grover Criswell as a T-66. The central vignette features a ¾ facing portrait of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, presented in an oval frame. The financial obligation, which appears around the portrait, states that
“The Confederate STATES OF AMERICA Will pay to the bearer on demand FIFTY DOLLARS”
, with the city of issue,
    “Richmond”
    , and the date,
    “Feby 17
    th
    1864”
, below the portrait. In common with other Confederate notes, this piece was redeemable for specie and would be withdrawn from circulation
“Two Years after the Ratification of a Treaty of Peace between the Confederate States and United States”
(this allowed for a period when the Confederacy could open trade and establish an economy of their own). The signatures of “
    F Jones
    ” (Miss Fannie C. Jones) and “
    K Korff
” (Miss Kate Korff), two female Treasury employees guarantee the validity of this note, one signing
    “FOR REGISTER”
    and the other
    “FOR TREASURER”
. A light pink overprint (an anti-counterfeiting measure) covers the majority of the face of the piece. The back of the note features an intricate design combining geometric shapes and the denomination, all executed in a lovely blue ink. Notes of this type are very popular with collectors due to the bold portrait of Jefferson Davis at the center. This particular piece has the added interest of having been signed by two women working for the Confederacy (we generally don’t think of women in war work until World War II). An eye-catching piece.
This note has been professionally graded and encapsulated by Paper Money Guaranty as “Choice
    Extremely Fine 45
”, with no additional notations on the holder. This note exhibits irregular margins, with three of the four sides being closely cut to the design. The back is reasonably well centered, with all of the design elements intact (the lower margin is slightly smaller, however). The contrast is quite light for the issue, with the protectorate appearing somewhat faded (this is probably due more to the improper mixing of the ink than actual fading). Minor toning can be seen in the blank area on the back, imparting to the paper an off-white to beige hue, especially at the edges. There are a few stains scattered throughout the design, the most obvious being at the left center on the back and at the right edge. Minor paper wrinkling, as well as a couple of small folds, undoubtedly account for the third-party grade. A nice addition to any Confederate currency or general Civil War collection.
