Description
1863 .00 State of North Carolina Note –PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45
Offered for your consideration is a .00 Civil War era note issued by the state of North Carolina, cataloged by the late Grover Criswell as CR. 122. The central vignette features a view of the state capitol building in Raleigh, North Carolina. This building is presented alone, with a small grove of trees behind and numerous pedestrians mingling in the foreground. The financial obligation, printed above and below the portrait, states that
“THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA WILL PAY TO BEARER TEN DOLLARS Redeemable at the TREASURY on or before the FIRST DAY OF JANUARY, 1866”
. This is followed by the location, “
RALEIGH
”, and the date “
1. JAN. 1863.
”, as well as the signatures of two treasury officials who sign
“for Compt.”
(for Comptroller) and
“for Treas.”
(for Treasurer). A red overprint reading
“X TEN”
covers part of the obligation. A statement at the top indicates that this note was “
FUNDABLE IN SIX PER CENT COUPON BONDS OF THE STATE, AFTER JAN. 1, 1866
”, while another at the bottom says that it was “
ISSUED UNDER ACT RATIFIED 20, DECEMBER 1862
”. The left end of the note is dominated by a decorative box, within which is the denomination, expressed as “
TEN
”, as well as the statement that the note was “
RECEIVABLE IN PAYMENT OF ALL PUBLIC DUES
”. The right end of the note features the denomination at the top, above a portrait of the state treasurer Jonathan Worth. In common with many notes of the era, the back of this piece is blank. It was “
Engd. & Lithod. by J. T. PATERSON & CO. AUGUSTA, GA
.” as evidenced by their imprint at the left center. While not among the original states to secede and form the Confederacy, by the close of the war, North Carolina would contribute more soldiers to the cause and be one of the principal suppliers to the war effort. Its currency is among the most heavily collected of all of the state issues, with numerous varieties and types in the series. This piece would make a great addition to any existing collection, or a super beginning to a new set. Worthy of a strong bid.
This note has been professionally graded and encapsulated by Paper Money Guaranty as “
Choice Extremely Fine 45
”, with no further notations on the holder. This particular specimen exhibits irregular margins, with the several areas being cut tight, affecting the inner frame-lines. A very small piece of the lower left corner is missing, noted for accuracy as it does not affect the overall eye-appeal of the piece. Minor toning is present across the entire surface, imparting to the paper a slightly off-white hue. Though not noted on the holder, minor ink corrosion can be seen at the serial number and signatures. Folds, commensurate with the grade, are noted. A nice, representative example of this very popular note.
A .95 charge will be added to the winning bid for postage and insurance.
A .00 charge will be added to any item picked up in person at our physical location.
