PMG Choice Uncirculated 63
Offered for your consideration is a somewhat crudely executed note issued in early 1862 by the Confederate element of the divided state of Missouri, catalogued by the late Grover Criswell as CR. 13. The central vignette features a ¾ facing portrait of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, presented in a very unflattering way, flanked by a panoply of flags and military equipage. The financial obligation, begun above the portrait and completed below, states that “

”, with the denomination being repeated in numerical format on medallions at the upper left and right. The note was ostensibly issued at “
JEFFERSON CITY
” on “
JANUARY 1

” and was signed at the conclusion by “
W Shields
” in his capacity as “
Com.r
” (Comptroller). In the lower left corner is a vignette depicting a female warrior standing atop a recumbent male, a spear thrust in his neck (this is reminiscent of the Virginia state seal). A fur-clad mountain man dominates the opposite corner, his head and arm resting on the barrel of his hunting rifle (his faithful dog appears on a hill in the background). Between the left and central vignettes is printed “
Countersigned by C. F. Jackson
” (engraved not written), while atop the financial obligation is a dark red “
ONE
”. Within the lower border is a statement which indicates that this note was “
RECEIVABLE IN PAYMENT OF ALL DUES TO THE STATE
”, as well as “
A MALUS ENG. N.
O.
”, the name and address of the printer (his monogram can be seen below the feet of the frontiersman, as well). This note was printed on light blue ledger paper, its original purpose being visible on its otherwise blank back. Though not particularly attractive, notes of this type were issued to help fund the Confederate effort to control this heavily divided state, and as such, are very popular with collectors.
This note has been professionally graded and encapsulated by Paper Money Guaranty as
“Choice Uncirculated 63”
, with no additional notations. Light toning, visible at the edges and particularly on the back, as well as a few scattered foxing spots are mentioned for accuracy, as these do not seriously affect the overall eye-appeal of the piece. The note is cut extremely tight at the top, with several areas of the frame-line being affected (no major design elements are missing). These edges are somewhat irregular, not surprising since these notes were cut from larger sheets by hand. The contrast is average for the issue, with all of the printed and manuscript portions fully legible (the serial number and signature are somewhat light). Worthy of a strong bid.
